Bashboy Still A Chance For Overseas Trip Despite Australian Steeplechase Defeat

Trainer Ciaron Maher has confirmed that Australian jumps racing superstar Bashboy is still a chance to race overseas despite his upset loss in the Australian Steeplechase (3900m) at Sandown today.

Bashboy was set the mammoth task of carrying 74.5kg, compared to the 64kg carried by the rest of the field, and the heavy weight clearly took its toll on the ten-year-old who battled on bravely to finish third behind Maythehorsebemagic and Zaman.

Zaman finished the race strongly and looked as though he might trouble Maythehorsebemagic but the son of Zabeel stayed on impressively to score a five and a half lengths victory in race record time and end Bashboy’s undefeated streak of nine race wins over the jumps.

Bashboy’s regular Jockey Steve Pateman told TVN after the race that the monster weight and firm condition of the track both played a part in the surprise defeat.

“He may have needed it a bit softer and he was weighed down,” Pateman said.

“I was really happy in the run until the half mile but when the pressure came on the others were going easy and I was starting to struggle.

“It’s usually the other way around.”

Maher has accepted the fact that Bashboy will have to carry a great deal of weight every time he contests a handicap event and told TVN that the connections will discuss the possibility of taking the Perugino gelding overseas for the first time.

“He’s rated up fairly highly so weight is always going to be a factor,” Maher said.

“The overseas thing, whether it is Japan or Europe, we will have to sit down and have a talk about it.

Robert Smerdon-trained Westsouthwest, who finished a narrow second behind Maythehorsebemagic in the J.J. Houlahan Hurdle at Sandown in July, recorded a tough victory over Montgomery in The Australian Hurdle (3400m) earlier in the day.

The major jumps races this season have now been completed but there is still plenty of other racing taking place all around Australia and you can find the best odds for every meeting at – home of the famous $500 bonus bet!
