Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday the action of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival steps up a notch with 11 individual Group 1 winners having been nominated for the 2013 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse.
To run as a Group 1 race for the first time this year, the $350,000 Memsie Stakes (1400m) has drawn its most impressive class of nominees yet with 18 hopefuls making up the early entries.
Among those are 11 previous elite level champions including Mark Kavanagh’s 2011 Thousand Guineas winner Atlantic Jewel who makes her much awaited return here.
The undefeated daughter of Fastnet Rock has won all seven of her career starts to date, most recently becoming a dual Group 1 winner in the All Aged Stakes at Randwick in April last year.
Injury has ruled her out of making another appearance until now with all eyes on the Cox Plate-bound five-year-old this Saturday.
Another big name champ kicking off their spring campaign here is the reigning Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon who is also likely to target the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.
A surprise nominee in today’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) entries, the Lloyd Williams-owned Robert Hickmott-trained import hasn’t raced since their fourth to Super Cool in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) in March.
Hickmott and Williams have also nominated for Seville on Saturday, the talented Galileo stallion having run a brave second to Green Moon in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) last October.
Also with multiple entries is Peter Moody with the former Luca Cumani-trained My Quest For Peace last seen running a disappointing 15th in Brisbane’s Stradbroke Handicap, and the progressive Strawberry Boy who has won both of their starts for him since being transferred from Gai Waterhouse.
Early Cox Plate fancy It’s A Dundeel from New Zealand also resumes here following a super autumn that included the 3YO Triple Crown, as does Mark Kavanagh’s Australian Cup winner Super Cool for their four-year-old debut.
Other big name Memsie Stakes hopes then include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente, dual WA Group 1 hero Luckygray and Chris Waller’s Queensland Derby champ Hawkspur who was a first-up seventh in the Warwick Stakes last Saturday.
The Memsie Stakes 2013 acceptances are taken on Wednesday and will be published right here at Races.com.au.
In the meantime why not get ready for the action by opening your bookmaker.com.au account and quoting the code BONUSBET to have your first deposit matched dollar for dollar as a bonus bet valued up to a juicy $500!
