Sydney’s headline race this weekend, the $125,000 Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) has attracted 15 early entries including the dominant trio in the latest Golden Rose odds.

Current favourite for the September 14 feature is Peter Snowden’s Exceed And Excel colt Sidestep ($6).

They hit the top of the markets for the three-year-olds’ classic after their second to Overreach in the Golden Slipper last season, Sidestep resuming with a credible fourth to Va Pensiero in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 17.

Close second in Golden Rose betting at $6.50 is then the Bart & James Cummings-trained Eurozone.

A son of the ill-fated Northern Meteor, Eurozone is undefeated with three wins from as many starts to date.

They go into Saturday’s race having won the traditional lead-up with a tidy one and a quarter length victory in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at Randwick on August 10.

Equal second favourite for the Group 1 is then Zoustar, Chris Waller’s fellow Northern Meteor colt resuming for the season.

A winner of their opening three starts including the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) back in May, Zoustar was last seen running just half a length away second to Romantic Touch in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm in June.

They have had two official trials this month at Rosehill meanwhile for a second and a fourth, veteran race jockey Jim Cassidy in the saddle for both, over 900m.

Other notable Run To The Rose nominees include the first three over the line in the San Domenico Stakes with winner Va Pensiero, the Anthony Cummings-trained runner-up Cluster and third placed Windjammer.

Also in the mix are The Rosebud second placed Dissident from the Victorian stables of premier Melbourne trainer Peter Moody, and the Kelso Wood-trained Brisbane visitor Into The Red who won by two and a half lengths at Eagle Farm this month.
