2013 Memsie Stakes Return for Melbourne Cup Winner

Owner Lloyd Williams has confirmed his reigning Melbourne Cup champ Green Moon will kick off their 2013 spring campaign this Saturday in the recently upgraded $350,000 Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Since news of its elevation to elite level, the Memsie Stakes 2013 has continued to be named as the kick-off point for all the staying stars this season including the Robert Hickmott-trained Green Moon.

The imported Montjeu stallion made headlines around the world last spring when backing up from a Cox Plate seventh to win the ‘race that stops a nation’ – the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) in November.

They came back for a two run autumn campaign in Melbourne back in February – March.

There they finished fourth in both runs firstly behind All Too Hard in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and then to Super Cool in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) when ridden by their globetrotting Melbourne Cup winning jockey Brett Prebble.

Now the $5 million earner begins another big spring in Saturday’s Memsie Stakes where they are set to face a whole host of stars.

Green Moon has been nominated for the ‘Big 3’ spring majors this year including the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

They’re a $31 chance of successfully defending their Melbourne Cup title, and are a shorter $21 for the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 19 as well as the Cox Plate 2013 with Williams saying the Cox Plate was their most likely target.

“He’s going OK,” Williams told AAP on Saturday.

Williams other major Melbourne Cup player this year is then $13 chance Sea Moon, the imported stallion to debut down under in a separate starting point than Green Moon – the $350,000 Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington Saturday week, September 7.

“Green Moon started in the Memsie last year. Sea Moon doesn’t need much racing,” Williams said.
