105 The Metropolitan 2013 Nominations Taken

The race toward the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival majors heated up today with Racing NSW taking the early nominations for three Group 1 showdowns including the 2013 The Metropolitan.

One of the carnival’s premier handicap clashes and a lead-up for the spring cups in Melbourne, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) is set to run at Royal Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day, Saturday October 5.

Like the day’s marquee race, the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), this season’s The Metropolitan has 105 in the mix.

Many of the staying types have been dually accepted for both the races at the meeting including a number of Chris Waller-trained stars.

Waller has a stranglehold on Epsom entries with 16 runners and is also well represented in The Metropolitan nominations with 11 hopefuls.

Some of Waller’s major Metropolitan players include his talented French import Bayrir, Doomben Cup winner Beaten Up who resumed with a close fourth in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) last Saturday, Brisbane Cup winner Moriarty, his Australian Oaks winning Redoute’s Choice mare Royal Descent and Doncaster winner Sacred Falls.

Last year’s The Metropolitan winner Glencadam Gold is nominated to defend their title this spring too as one of 13 entries for trainer Gai Waterhouse who holds the record for most wins in the event with eight.

Also featuring in the top end of The Metropolitan results last year back for another shot this year are Waller’s runner-up Kelinni, and stablemate to the winner, third placed Reuben Percival.

Along with Glencadam Gold and Reuben Percival some of Waterhouse’s other more notable hopes are six-year-old Cape Cross gelding Julienas who resumed with a second in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup last week, and Galileo stallion Michelangelo yet to debut down under.

Another big player last spring that features in these entries is the Lloyd Williams-owned Melbourne Cup champ Green Moon who is to resume racing in Melbourne’s $350,000 Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield this Saturday.

Among some of the other more notable The Metropolitan Handicap 2013 nominations are the Peter Moody-trained Viola Ici, recent Grafton Cup winner Mr O’Ceirin and Green Moon’s stablemate Sea Moon who will run in Australia for the first time Saturday week in the Makybe Diva Stakes.

The Metropolitan final field of acceptors is due for release on Wednesday October 2.

Betting on the Sydney Group 1’s is set to open at our No. 1 recommended bookie bookmaker.com.au shortly making now the perfect time to sign-up and take advantage of their juicy $500 bonus welcome bet offer for first time depositing players!
