War Produces Upset Win In 2013 Up And Coming Stakes

War has emerged the surprise winner of the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes at Warwick Farm Racecourse today August 24, 2013.

The three-year-old bounced back from a sixth placing in a Canterbury maiden on August 7, 2013, to win today’s 2013 Up And Coming Stakes.

War has now won one of his three race starts and has earned more than $95,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

Paying odds of $15 to win today’s 2013 Up And Coming Stakes at bookmaker.com.au, War won the race in dominant fashion by close to a length ahead of a fast finishing Drago.

Vilanova finished in third position in a photo with race favourite Pitcrew, who suffered his first defeat in the 2013 Up And Coming Stakes.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is expecting big things from War as the spring racing carnival progresses.

“(He’s a) very good horse in the making,” Waterhouse said.

“He’s gone ahead in leaps and bounds.

“Today he was able to dictate.

“I loved the way he came away in the straight.”

Waterhouse was full of praise for jockey Tommy Berry’s 2013 Up And Coming Stakes ride.

“Tom’s magical, I can tell you that,” she said.

Berry was equally gracious about Waterhouse’s training ability.

“It just shows how good a trainer Gai is,” he said of War’s surprise victory.

“She can turn these horses around very quick.

“I hopped on him today and he was a different horse.

“I was travelling really well.

“We were just hoping the penny would drop.

“He’s still got a little bit to learn. He’s got a long way to go.”
