Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The Warwick Stakes Day racing action draws to a close on Saturday with the running of a bumper edition of the 2013 Show County Quality– betting selections from the Races.com.au crew for which are listed here.
Due to jump at 5:00pm (AEST) as Race 8 at Warwick Farm Racecourse, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) is shaping up as one of the best editions of the handicap feature in years.
It’s past Group 1 winners galore in the big 16-horse field, the favourite of which is Gary Portelli’s locally-trained California Dane stallion Rebel Dane ($2.80).
Also the early market mover, Rebel Dane is set to jump from gate seven with just 54.5kg and Glen Boss to ride as they race for their first time since bumming out when 10th to Pierro in the George Ryder back in April.
Should be able to bounce back fresh however after a winning trial at the track last month with Boss aboard.
Other single-figure fancies in the markets then include 2013 Cox Plate-bound dual Group 1 winning mare Norzita ($6.50)who is no co-trained by James Cummings and his legendary grandfather Bart, and Brisbane raider Sizzling ($7) who could also be set on the Cox Plate path this spring by trainer Kelso Wood.
So are these the right three to lock into the Show County Quality trifecta?
Or should punters be looking further down the markets at something at double figures for value such as Guy Walter’s resuming triple Group 1 winner Appearance ($11) with the 59kg top weight to overcome, or Ichihara ($12) who won the Gosford Guineas back in April?
#5 Sizzling ($7)
Lots to like about Wood’s resuming Cox Plate hope who we think can surprise first-up and continue that nice record they’ve got fresh (4-2-0-0). Out a little wide in 11 but should be able to cross at this track, and distance is right for them at this stage (8-3-1-0). Goes well on all ground, Group 1 winner as a two-year-old, took out the Group 2 Queensland Guineas before their Stradbroke seventh.
#9 Rebel Dane ($2.80)
They are top of the odds and there are a number of good reasons for that. One is their undefeated first-up record and their flawless record over the distance including their Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) victory when resuming back in February. Competitive last season when fourth in the Randwick Guineas and won a trial at the track leading up to this. Boss factor and right draw (7) and weight (54.5kg).
#11 Title ($26)
Trainer Joe Pride will have most of his attention on Rain Affair in the Warwick Stakes on Saturday but later in the day he’ll move his focus to Title who is second-up here. Their second-up record is a cracker (8-3-3-0) and shouldn’t be ignored. Veteran of 34 starts before this and have a decent ability over the distance (18-5-4-3), also drawn to perfect in four and gets in on the 54kg minimum.
