2013 Warwick Stakes Tips & Form Selections

There are a host of individual Group 1 winners, six Chris Waller-trained resuming stars and an odds-on favourite so which horse should you be backing in your Warwick Stakes 2013 betting tips for Saturday?

Rain Affair

Running as the sixth race at Warwick Farm at 3:40pm (AEST) this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) has drawn an outstanding field of talented gallopers vying for an early season black type as they head towards the carnival majors.

Warwick Stakes odds are firmly led by the Joe Pride-trained Rain Affair coming off a blistering five and a half length win in the Group 3 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick a fortnight ago.

That was the Commands six-year-olds’ first-up run for the season and Pride is hoping they can account for this field as he aims to get them a deserved Group 1 trophy this spring either over the mile in Sydney or in a Melbourne sprint feature.

Rain Affair may have a wide gate (13 of 14) to overcome but they’re odds-on at $1.85 with just one of their rivals considered a single figure chance of an upset.

That horse is the Guy Walter-trained Streama ($6) a dual Group 1 winning Stratum mare who races for the first time since her Tattersall’s Tiara second in Brisbane back in June.

Other notable hopes then include the likes of Waller’s Doomben Cup winner Beaten Up ($11), Streama’s progressive young stablemate Toydini ($12) and the Peter Moody-trained stayer Sneak A Peek ($19).

While the bulk of the other runners are likely not wound-up to win with longer distanced features like the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate on the horizon, the recent first-up upset by Tuscan Fire ($100) at Flemington earlier in the month showed even the stayers can come out with a fresh win over less distance on a good day.

So to help you uncover where the value is at the weekend’s big one, below are the Races.com.au team’s Warwick Stakes betting tips.

1st

#3 Rain Affair ($1.85)

Going to be hard to hold out this deserving favourite. Missile Stakes win was a sensational effort and will have come on from that. No dramas with the wide barrier, there’s room to get across and they like to get out front on their own and do it their way any way. Versatile on all ground so not worried about the firmer track. Has the fitness edge, loves this track (4-3-0-0) and can’t see anything stopping them.

2nd

#4 Beaten Up ($11)

Plenty to like about Waller’s Doomben Cup winning import. Yes will be better later over more distance but races well fresh so think they’ve done nothing wrong down under yet. Will get one of the best runs of the race from inside alley with Hugh Bowman riding and is their trainer’s pick of his six in this.

3rd

#14 Streama ($6)

Only mare up against the boys here but she’s a classy one and deserves her price here. She’s a dual Group 1 champ and was unlucky not to add another elite level to her record with three close calls last prep. Was impressive in her Sydney trial at the start of the month and in gate five with the Glen Boss factor should kick things off with another good run to add to her excellent first-up record (5-0-3-2).
