Running as the fifth race on the Warwick Stakes Day card, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 IBIS Styles Lansvale Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) has drawn 11 hopefuls, two of which are sitting top of the odds at $4.80.

Drawn on the rails with barrier one and Hugh Bowman to ride is Commands colt Vilanova who was last seen finishing fourth to Romantic Touch in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 8.

Formerly prepared in New Zealand where they enjoyed a stakes win at Te Rapa in December, they’ve been with Moody since the start of the winter where they had a killer campaign in Queensland.

Leading up to the JJ Atkins they posted back-to-back Group 2 seconds over 1200m and 1350m respectively with Saturday to be their first official start in Sydney.

Drago meanwhile has barrier eight on Saturday with Peter Robl to ride, the Danehill Dancer colt a last start Sydney winner.

A progressive type, Drago was tested at Group 1 level at just their second career start when fourth to Guelph in the Sires Produce at Randwick in April.

They were fourth again to the same Peter Snowden-trained star in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the mile on Sydney Cup Day when defeated under a length, before travelling to Rosehill in May to win the Juvenile Stayer (1800m) by four lengths.

Outside of the top two there are plenty of other genuine chances in the Up And Coming Stakes markets out for an upset including:

  • #5 Pitcrew ($5.50) – Undefeated Gai Waterhouse-trained Sebring gelding has won three from three, the latest at Warwick Farm over 1400m on July 13, all on Slow – Heavy ground though and will be a firmer track here, distance will suit and regular rider Nash Rawiller stays on
  • #7 Diamond Oasis ($6.50) – John O’Shea’s nicely-bred Lonhro colt returns to racing kicking off a 2013 Caulfield Guineas campaign here on the back of an awesome 2.5 length winning Warwick Farm trial from last Friday, has form around some of the better of this age group and are tipped for a good season
  • #9 Dream Forward ($8) – Lightly-raced Charge Forward filly racing for just the fourth time, returned at Canterbury in July with a nice Canterbury win, goes up in class here and races over the 1300m for the first time so there are a few queries

At longer odds but still worth a look in are then the likes of the Bjorn Baker-trained Champagne Stakes runner-up Fuerza ($10) who will be better over more distance, last start The Rosebud minor placegetter behind Eurozone Dowdstown Charlie ($11) and Peter Snowden’s Exceed And Excel colt Champollion ($12) who won the Group 3 The Schweppervescence over 1400m on Golden Slipper Day.
