Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Joe Pride’s flying six-year-old Rain Affair has opened odds-on favourite to win back-to-back races this month when they take on a crack field in the 2013 Warwick Stakes in Sydney on Saturday.
The Commands gelding proved themselves one of Sydney’s fastest when they resumed at Randwick on August 10 to put an easy five and a half lengths on veteran galloper Mic Mac, who runs in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup today, in the Group 3 Missile Stakes (1200m).
Rain Affair relished the Slow (7) track there and will have to prove themselves on firmer ground at Warwick Farm in the $175,000 Group 2 Pro-Ride Warwick Stakes (1400m) this weekend.
With an outstanding record at the track (three wins from four starts) however and a good second-up record too (two from four) the bookies are taking no chances here.
Despite drawing wide with gate 13 of 14, Rain Affair is top of the Warwick Stakes odds at a quote of $1.80, tipped to have the fitness edge over a field were eight of their rivals are returning for the season.
Incredibly despite the bumper field there is just one other runner under double figures in Warwick Stakes betting, the Guy Walter-trained Streama ($6).
A dual Group 1 winning daughter of Stratum, five-year-old Streama races for the first time here since her second to Red Tracer in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 22.
While she’s never won first-up before, she has finished top three in all five of her resuming runs to date (5-0-3-2) and looked on track to continue that nice record with her sizzling barrier trial win over 900m at Rosehill on August 5.
Juicy prices of $11 or over can then be found on all the other major players as they warm up for the longer distance majors of the Sydney and Melbourne Spring Racing Carnivals, like the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley in October.
The other notable hopes include:
- #4 Beaten Up ($11) – Gets the rails run from gate one with Hugh Bowman, normally on Streama who instead will be ridden by Glen Boss, aboard this Chris Waller-trained import had a stellar end of season back in May when a nose away second in the Listed Rowley Mile over the Hawkesbury mile before their impressive win in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane
- #13 Toydini ($12) – Walter’s other runner is heading toward the 2013 Epsom Handicap like their well fancied stablemate Streama who they could get a lovely trail behind here from gate six (Streama in five), the Bernardini four-year-old was a dual Group winner in Sydney during the autumn including a four length victory over Hawkspur in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and look in a nice position for a big run here
At even longer odds but not to be ruled out completely are then the likes of the Peter Moody-trained Italian import Sneak A Peek ($19) first-up since their Caulfield Cup eighth, Waller’s resuming Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur ($21) and another Waller-trained Group 1 winner Foreteller ($21) who took out the Ranvet Stakes back in March.
