Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
In a wide open betting race where half the field is battling for favouritism, Gai Waterhouse’s stakes winning import Julienas is narrowly topping the Hawkesbury Gold Cup 2013 odds for this afternoon.
There are 10 hopes in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Panthers Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) which is set to light-up the Hawkesbury track at 4:20pm (AEST) as Race 7.
Of the 10 facing off, five are at $6 or under in the latest Hawkesbury Gold Cup odds with Cape Cross six-year-old Julienas the narrow $4.40 top elect.
Drawn in gate three with Nash Rawiller to ride they run for the first time since their disappointing last over the testing two miles of the Sydney Cup back in late April.
Formerly prepared in Britain Julienas has already enjoyed three black type wins for Waterhouse down under, the most recent of which was a two length effort over Permit in the Listed NE Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill in March.
While their first-up record leaves a fair bet to be desired, resuming over the mile is sure to suit and they were impressive when fourth in a 1400m trial at Randwick at the start of the month.
The other single-figure chances in Hawkesbury Gold Cup betting are then:
- #2 Mic Mac ($5) – Evergreen Paul Messara-trained eight-year-old enjoyed a Civic Stakes win three back, their first victory in 16 months, and have since run two brave seconds including behind Warwick Stakes favourite Rain Affair in the Group 3 Missile Stakes, equal 59kg top-weight but has been carrying lots of kilos so that’s a non-issue
- #3 Kinnersley ($5.50) – Previously sat at the top of the markets but has eased a bit, Gai Waterhouse’s other hope drawn nicely in barrier four with Tommy Berry to ride, the seven-year-old was a nice third in the Winter Challenge last start and won the Gouburn Cup over the mile last November
- #4 Coup Ay Tee ($5.50) – Chris Waller’s recent Winter Challenge winner comes off a fifth at Rosehill when going back to 1400m last Saturday, didn’t like being up front with no cover there so will likely be ridden back today with Jason Collett replacing Rawiller for the ride
- #8 Loaded ($6) – Early market mover well backed in from $9 to $6, gets the run of the race from barrier one with Tim Bell to ride, last three starts have all been winning efforts as this Gosford galloper comes off a nice trip to Brisbane that included a Listed Tattersall’s Mile victory at Doomben in mid-July
There’s also hope with some of the double-figure chances including the reigning Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner Darci Be Good ($11) who only has to carry the 54kg minimum and the Bjorn Baker-trained Cantonese ($15) who hasn’t won since their stellar six length winning effort in the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) at Rosehill back in December.
