Coup Ay Tee bounced back from a disappointing performance in the Spring Preview Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday to win the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) this afternoon.
Coup Ay Tee was ridden at the tail of the field in the early stages of the Hawkesbury Gold, after being ridden forward on Saturday, and flashed down the outside in the final 100 metres to record a narrow victory in an exciting finish from Julienas and Darci Be Good.
Extreme outsider Samui Lad was the leader in the early stages of the race and looked like he had pinched victory when he kicked clear with two hundred metres left to run but the backmarkers swooped late and he narrowly missed out on the placings.
Gai Waterhouse-trained Julienas, who was included in the nominations for both the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Cox Plate (2040m), finished strongly in his first-up performance and looks as though he could be on track for a big 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign.
Gosford-based Loaded went into the race on the back of three straights wins, including a comfortable defeat of Coffs Harbour Cup winner Pepperwood in the Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) at Doomben, and was well backed in the lead-up to the race but jumped slowly and was not a factor in the finish.
The victory capped off a lengthy campaign for Coup Ay Tee who was having his first ever career start at Group 3 level.
The son of Danske recorded an impressive victory in the Gifts.com.au Handicap (1400m) at Randwick in May and finished third behind Under The Sun in the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) before scoring the biggest win of his career over the highly fancied European import Bayrir in the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) at Rosehill just over a fortnight ago.
This year’s edition of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup was the first to be held in August as the race has traditionally been run on Crown Oaks Day in November.
