Commanding Jewel Narrow 2013 Carlyon Stakes Betting Favourite

Leon Corstens’ returning Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel may have been out of action for the past 10 months, but that hasn’t stopped the bookies installing her as the narrow favourite in the 2013 Carlyon Stakes odds for this weekend.

After injury ruled the daughter of Commands out of the autumn the carnival lost one of its top fillies as Commanding Jewel enjoyed a stellar spring that culminated with a win in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

The now four-year-old mare has overcome her setbacks however and is ready to strut her stuff first-up in the $120,000 Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Despite the break between runs and nothing but Corstens’ word to go on that she’s ready to go, Commanding Jewel is the $4.20 favourite in the Carlyon Stakes odds.

She should get a gun run in the set weights plus penalties sprint however drawn ideally in barrier three of 11 with Craig Williams to ride.

Hot on her heels at $4.40 is then the also resuming Adamantium in gate five with Craig Newitt booked for the mount.

Danny O’Brien’s Elusive City gelding hasn’t run since New Year’s Day but posted back-to-back Flemington wins during the summer by easy margins including their two and a half length effort over Catapulted in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) last time out.

There are two other single figure chances in the latest Carlyon Stakes betting markets then with one of the veterans of the field General Truce ($6.50) and reigning Melbourne Cup winning hoop Brett Prebble’s ride Golden Sunshine ($7.50).

Also in the mix at longer odds worth a look are the likes of Cranbourne galloper Chosen To Fly ($10), last start Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) winner Broken ($10), Desleigh Forster’s in-form Brisbane raider Adebisi ($11) and former Hong Kong sprinter Pocket Rockets ($11).

The Tony McEvoy-trained Adelaide visitor Pocket Rockets has been in sensational form of late winning four of their past five starts, and vie for win number four on the trot here.
