Commanding Carlyon Stakes 2013 Field

A top field of gallopers are engaged to face off in one of the two Moonee Valley black types running in Melbourne this Saturday including returning Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel in the 2013 Carylon Stakes.

Running as the third race at the meeting at 1:25pm (AEST) this year’s $120,000 Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) has drawn a total of 11 acceptors.

One of the spruik horses in the mix is the Leon Corstens-trained Commanding Jewel who has come up trumps with barrier three and Craig Williams to ride.

The Carlyon will be the Commands mare’s first run since her three length victory over Dear Demi in last October’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

She was injured and missed the autumn but is now on the Cox Plate 2013 path in the spring starting with her first-up run on Saturday at a track and distance she won on and over at this meeting 12 months ago.

Other notable last start winners in the Carlyon Stakes this year include the Darren Weir-trained Broken and Tony McEvoy’s in-form Pocket Rockets who have drawn in gates four and eight respectively.

Broken was a nice half length Flemington winner earlier in the month, the veteran seven-year-old continuing their good recent form beating home Group 1 winner Temple Of Boom in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m).

Pocket Rockets meanwhile will be ridden by apprentice hoop Kayla Nisbet as they vie for their fifth win from six starts and their fourth on the trot, Nisbet aboard for their most recent effort over the 1000m at Flemington a fortnight ago.

Also lining up in the feature are the likes of the Desleigh Forster-trained Rubiton Stakes winner Adebisi and Rick Worthington’s Danzero mare Golden Sunshine who will be ridden by last year’s Melbourne Cup winning jockey Brett Prebble.
