Budriguez Heads Penny Edition Stakes Field 2013

The horse that dead-heated with Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune at Flemington back in March, the David Jolly-trained Budriguez is the headline acceptor for Saturday’s 2013 Penny Edition Stakes field in Adelaide.

The local Al Maher seven-year-old is one of 12 acceptors for this year’s $80,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) which is set to run as Morphettville Parks Race 8 at 4:40pm (SA time).

Goolwa-based Jolly is confident that his veteran galloper, who also won the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) and Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) in Melbourne earlier in the year, can bounce back from their first-up run with another good run this weekend.

First-up Budriguez, equal first with subsequent PB Lawrence Stakes champ Puissance De Lune in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) during the autumn, was well beaten at Morphettville when seventh to Just Discreet in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m).

They get a chance to atone second-up when they go up in distance for the Penny Edition however where they should be better suited to the weight-for-age conditions of the showdown.

Spring Stakes winner Just Discreet meanwhile also backs up in the Penny Edition, the Phillip Stokes-trained Exceed And Excel mare drawn wide in 11 one inside of Budriguez who has the far outside gate.

The other last-start winner in the mix is then the Craig Stewart-trained Clangalang seven-year-old Our Freed Man who has come up trumps with barrier three after winning at the track at the start of the month from the same gate.

Of the interstate raiders the best look to be Neil Dyer’s triple Darwin Cup winner Hawks Bay and Peter Moody’s Encosta De Lago mare Kneeling.

Other notable hopes then include Just Discreet’s stablemate Shout Out Loud and the Will Clarken-trained Red Ransom gelding Dee Bee Nine on a seven day back-up having run a disappointing seventh to Thy in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne last Saturday.

The full 2013 Sportingbet Penny Edition Stakes field, barrier draw, weights and jockeys are listed in the table below.
