Golden Rose 2013 Odds Ease on Overreach

The 2013 Golden Rose odds on early favourite Overreach have eased out this week following a disappointing trial effort by the Gai Waterhouse-trained filly at Royal Randwick on Monday morning.

Owner of the Golden Slipper winner George Altomonte has made the announcement that Overreach may not even run in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 14 after she was beaten in her first official hit-out of the season.

A nicely-bred daughter of Exceed And Excel, Overreach won three of her five starts as a juvenile.

Her most notable win was of course in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) before she was beaten into third last start by the Peter Snowden-trained Guelph in the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 13.

While Guelph looked in fine form ahead of her shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in October winning a 900m trial in a come from behind effort at Rosehill this morning, yesterday Overreach left a lot to be desired in her Sydney jumpout.

Ridden by Tommy Berry in the 1050m trial Overreach was defeated by low-key stablemate Marseille Roulette in an effort that disappointed Waterhouse and connections.

“I was expecting more from her,” Waterhouse told Racenet.

“I’ll have to talk to Mr Altomonte and work out what we’ll do from here. She’s going through a growth phase.”

Altomonte then said he would listen to Waterhouse’s advice and possibly bypass the Rose.

“I’ll be guided by what Gai thinks,” he said.

“But I’d say there are second thoughts about going to the Golden Rose.

“There are plenty of other options if she is not ready for that race.”

Berry however wasn’t too worried saying she displayed her usual zip early and only fitness was likely holding her back.

“She `knocked’ up the last 150m, she needed that solid hitout,” he said.

The run also saw bookies wind her out in the early Golden Rose betting markets, Overreach now at $5.50 with James & Bart Cummings’ undefeated Northern Meteor colt Eurozone ($6) fast catching up.
