A number of notable staying types will kick off their spring campaigns in Adelaide this Saturday with Morphettville’s Penny Edition Stakes 2013 attracting a bumper list of nominations.

The $80,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) has been host to a number of turf stars over the years including last season when the 2011 Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed took it out.

Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas’ star mare headed to Melbourne directly after her Penny Edition win and went back-to-back with a nice victory in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) – the Flemington feature to run as a Group 1 for the first time this spring on September 7.

This year a 17 strong line-up of both local and interstate gallopers make up the Penny Edition Stakes nominations, the top-rated of which is the David Jolly-trained Budriguez.

Al Maher seven-year-old Budriguez enjoyed a sensational autumn in Melbourne winning three of their four starts all at Group level including their dead heat victory with 2013 Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

After Puissance De Lune easily won first-up in the PB Lawrence Stakes last Saturday, Jolly is hopeful his horse can keep the nice Blamey Stakes form going.

“It’s nice to know that the form-line is holding up OK,” Jolly told Adelaide Now.

“But we know that horse has probably got a lot more upside than us.

“We’re happy to coast along and run in races up to a mile, but it’s certainly no disgrace to dead-heat with him.”

Budriguez resumed this season at Morphettville on August 10 but could only manage to finish seven lengths away seventh to Just Discreet in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m), improvement expected as they go up in distance.

“He probably ran about as expected, they were a bit sharp for him and he doesn’t enjoy the wet track,” Jolly said.

“He’s improved and he’ll probably run better (on Saturday) because it’s over further and on the inner track, but there are probably a couple of horses more capable on the wet than him.

“He’s a horse who takes a few runs to get rock-hard fit, so we’re happy to let him cruise around and get there at home before taking him over to Melbourne.”

Phillip Stokes’ Spring Stakes winner Just Discreet has also been nominated for the Penny Edition second-up, the talented Exceed And Excel mare looking to go back-to-back at the track.

Also coming via the Spring Stakes are the lies of the Richard Jolly-trained Blevic mare Golden Penny (3rd) and Budriguez’s stablemate Danish Spy (4th).

Dane Shadow mare Danish Spy is always thereabouts in this class having run second to Star Of Giselle in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) back in April and fourth to subsequent Stradbroke Handicap winner Linton in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) in May.

“She’s come back well,” Jolly said.

“Probably early in their campaigns, she’s going to be a more realistic chance in those races than he (Budriguez) is, certainly while the tracks are soft.

“She’ll take her place Saturday and then more than likely go to the Balaklava Cup.”

The $80,000 Listed Balaklava Cup (1600m) runs on September 4.

Other highly rated Penny Edition Stakes hopefuls include the Neil Dyer-trained triple Darwin Cup winner Hawks Bay and Will Clarken’s Red Ransom gelding Dee Bee Nine looking to improve on their seventh to Thy in last weekend’s Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Just Discreet’s trainer Stokes meanwhile has also nominated for Anabaa six-year-old La Praline and veteran eight-year-old Shout Out Loud.

The 2013 Penny Edition Stakes final field and barriers are due for release on Wednesday so stay tuned.
