A 10-horse field of stayers has been accepted for the Hawkesbury Gold Cup 2013, the handicap clash set to run at Hawkesbury Racecourse this Thursday.
Set to run as Race 7 at 4:20pm (AEST), the $150,000 Group 3 Panthers Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) features some quality types this year including Paul Messara’s in-form veteran Mic Mac.
Messara has opted to run the Statue Of Liberty eight-year-old here instead of Saturday’s Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) giving them the chance to prove themselves over the mile for the first time.
Winner of the Civic Stakes three back which broke a 16-month drought, Mic Mac was last seen finishing five and a half lengths away second to runaway speedster Rain Affair in the Group 3 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on August 10.
Regular rider Christian Reith retains the ride on Thursday but the duo will have to do work early to get into a nice position from their wide barrier nine draw.
Mic Mac is installed top of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup weights with 59kg, equal with the Gai Waterhouse-trained import Julienas.
Drawn better in gate three with Nash Rawiller to ride, Cape Cross six-year-old Julieans races for the first time since finishing last behind Mourayan in the Sydney Cup over the two miles on April 27.
They have winning form in Sydney up to a mile and a half however and have run well first-up over the mile in both Sydney and earlier in Britain before.
Following the top weights are then two other hopes weighted above the 54kg minimum with Waterhouse’s other runner Kinnersley (56kg) and the Chris Waller-trained Coup Ay Tee (54.5kg).
Al Maher seven-year-old Kinnersley comes off a nice third when beaten under a length in the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) on August 3 and should appreciate the 1600m which they won the Goulburn Cup over last November.
Winter Challenge winner Coup Ay Tee meanwhile backed up to finish a disappointing fifth to Honorius in the $85,000 Racing NSW Spring Preview Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill last Saturday.
They carried 57.5kg then however, up from 54kg they had for the Winter Challenge, and will relish the drop back three kilos for their Hawkesbury assignment.
Other notable hopes in the mix include the reigning Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner Darci Be Good drawn ideally in barrier two with last year’s winning hoop Kathy O’Hara to ride, and the in-form Loaded.
Grant Allard’s Flying Nicko six-year-old Loaded has come up with the inside alley and will be vying for their fourth consecutive win.
They were last seen putting nearly two lengths on Pepperwood at Doomben in mid-July to win the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m).
