Moody Eyes Toorak Handicap 2013 for Regal Roller Winner Thy

The 2013 Toorak Handicap has become a realistic Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival goal for Peter Moody’s mare Thy after her first-up win at Caulfield on the weekend which has shelved her previous retirement plans.

The daughter of O’Reilly made her five-year-old debut in the $120,000 Listed Australian Defense Force Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) on Saturday, earning talks of Group 1 assignments this prep instead of a trip to the breeding barn as was originally looking to be the likely option.

“I aimed her at this meeting and was looking for the 1400-metre race she won here last year but it wasn’t on the program so this was the back-up option,” Moody told Racing Victoria on Saturday.

“She’s a good quality mare, above average and a multiple stakes winner now. She might be in for a good campaign.”

It was a nice effort from the resuming $21 roughie, ridden by Vlad Duric, who was able to put a full length on Colin & Cindy Alderson’s $5.50 favourite That’s The One.

Glen Boss then rode the narrow third placegetter Dany The Fox ($7.50) who was a further long neck away.

A winner of four of her 13 starts in total now, Thy is also now a dual stakes winner having won the Listed Aspiration Quality over the Warwick Farm mile back in March.

And she’s no stranger to elite level racing either.

During her three-year-old season last autumn she contested two Group 1 races.

First was the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill where she was a brave fourth to the since retired Mosheen.

Then it was up to the mile and a half for the Australian Oaks (2400m) where she put in a stellar effort to cross one and a half lengths away third to the Guy Walter-trained Streama.

Moody plans to give her another shot at bagging a Group 1 trophy this time in, naming the $400,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) back at Caulfield on October 12, Caulfield Guineas Day, as her likely target.

“I think she’s probably best at a mile and maybe even 1800-metres now that she is a more mature mare and it’s great to see her back in winning form,” Moody said.

“It’d be nice to think she’s back here in a Toorak Handicap in a couple of months’ time but the beautiful thing about the Victorian spring is that you have an array of choice for mares for set weights races.

“We’ll take this win and think about it.”
