2013 Cockram Stakes Win for Octavia

The Michael Moroney-trained Octavia scored a very impressive win in the Cockram Stakes 2013 at Caulfield on Saturday when saluting as the punters’ pick in the mares-only showdown.

Coming off a number of good winter runs including a last start win at the track and distance, Holy Roman Emperor four-year-old Octavia went out as the $3.20 favourite in the $150,000 Group 3 KS Environmental Cockram Stakes (1200m).

Despite having to go up from 51kg to 56kg the Kerrin McEvoy-ridden top fancy proved her class putting a half length on the Peter Moody-trained A Time For Julia ($8) in second.

Third place then went to Oriental Ruby ($26) who was the same distance away again just nudging out Bonaria ($15) who was less than a length off the winner in fourth.

It was a nice result for McEvoy and Moroney who reunited their rider-trainer relationship for the win – McEvoy having gotten his big break riding Moroney’s 2000 Melbourne Cup winner Brew to victory.

“She was stepping up to a nice grade of race today, but she’s been in winning form and obviously a few of the other fancied runners were first up,” McEvoy told Racing Victoria on Saturday.

“She’s got the speed to put them to the sword and she was able to do that again today.”

Moroney has high hopes for Octavia having seen the progression of a number of past mares from his stables go onto big things after a Cockram win.

“This is a race that we won with Pernod and she went on and won a Group 1, so I hope this filly can go on and do the same,” Moroney said.

Pernod won the Cockram on debut in August of 2002 going onto take out the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) the next month with McEvoy in the saddle.

She also ran a very close third to Shot Of Thunder in that year’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) with McEvoy retaining his association.

Moroney would love for Octavia to develop into a genuine 2013 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes chance on September 29 but said her more likely next-up run would be in the $220,000 Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on the seventh of next month.
