Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Some top spring carnival-bound mares will return to racing at Caulfield on Saturday in the 2013 WW Cockram Stakes– betting tips and exotic selections for which can be found below.
The last on an eight-race Melbourne program on the weekend, the $150,000 Group 3 KS Environmental Cockram Stakes (1200m) is down to 14 hopefuls thanks to the early scratching of #4 Catkins and #16 Sinhala drawn in gates 14 and 15 respectively.
Cockram Stakes betting meanwhile is led by the classy Octavia ($3.80).
Michael Moroney’s Holy Roman Emperor four-year-old comes off an impressive three and a half length win over the track and distance from July 27.
She also won the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes over the 1200m at Caulfield back in February making her a specialist at the track and distance.
That may be the case but there is a matter of the weight on Saturday with Octavia to go from 51kg last start to 56kg for the Cockram.
Other top fancies in the markets then include the rails-drawn Lady Melksham ($5) to be ridden by Glen Boss, Peter Moody’s recent stable acquisition Kneeling ($7), another Moody-trained runner in the lightly raced A Time For Julia ($7.50) and the autumn’s Australian Guineas runner-up You’re So Good ($8).
So which of these shorties in the markets should you back for the win?
And is it worth looking at a double-figure outsider such as Oasis Bloom ($13) or early market mover Petite Diablesse ($16), third to Alzora beaten only a long neck in February’s Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington, to add into your exotic bets for value?
#6 Octavia ($3.80)
Deserving favourite should prove hard to beat. Really nice recent record with two devastatingly close seconds and a last start win in Melbourne during the winter. Most recent effort was over this track and distance winning a fillies and mares handicap by three and a half lengths. Go up in weights but have handled bigger weights before. Also a stakes winner over the Caulfield 1200m and have fitness edge.
#5 You’re So Good ($8)
Loved their Australian Guineas run when second to Ferlax in the Group 1 over the Flemington mile against the boys. Were outclassed on a Slow (7) in the Vinery Stud Stakes in Sydney last start but ready to atone. Open age company here now a four-year-old but should handle that first-up as they run sensationally well fresh. Haven’t been to Caulfield but will appreciate getting back to Melbourne. 1200m will be too short for them later on but at this stage looks spot on.
#3 Lady Melksham ($5)
John Sadler-trained Artie Schiller five-year-old primed to get a gun run from the inside alley here with a triple Melbourne Cup winning hoop in the saddle no less. Hasn’t raced since her eight at Flemington back in April when up against the boys but is undefeated first-up so you know they will be good here again. Won this race 12 months ago when resuming in last year’s Cockram in the mud. Will be on firmer ground this time but they have won plenty of times on Good (3) tracks so versatile, experienced and a good inclusion in all exotics.
