Vain Stakes 2013 Betting Tips

The 2013 Vain Stakes featuring a field of promising young colts and geldings runs as part of the Caulfield racing action in Melbourne on Saturday and to help you back a winner below are the team’s insider tips on the three-year-olds’ feature.

Running as race four at 2:00pm (AEST) this year’s $135,000 Group 3 Legacy 90th Anniversary Vain Stakes (1100m) field and markets feature nine hopefuls.

While the betting race is close, the current favourite at a quote of $3.10 is the Peter Snowden-trained Safeguard.

Drawn in gate three with Kerrin McEvoy aboard the Exceed And Excel colt is undefeated to date with two wins from as many career starts including their good Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) success back in April.

Other notable hopes after the Vain Stakes trophy then include the Peter Moody-trained Il Cavallo ($3.60), Hill Spy ($4.80) who won on debut in Adelaide back in July, Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($6.50) and Clevadude ($6.50).

So will Safeguard prove a safe bet for favourite backers?

Or is there an upset Vain Stakes result on the cards this year?

#2 Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($6.50)

Value in this David Hayes-trained colt that hasn’t run since Sydney Cup Day when a credible fifth beaten under two lengths in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m). That was their third elite level assignment following a Golden Slipper fourth from a wide gate (13 of 16) on a Slow track, and their earlier second to Miracles Of Life in the Blue Diamond Stakes. They come back to Caulfield for the first time since then here and while they’ll be better getting up over more ground, have enough in the tank to win. Looked fit too with their 1050m barrier trial at Randwick on August 2 and will be ridden on Saturday from a gun draw (2) with last year’s Melbourne Cup winning hoop Brett Prebble aboard.

#1 Safeguard ($3.10)

Undefeated so that counts for something, as does having master juvenile trainer Snowden behind them. Are first-up off a notable break but were a Group 3 winner in the Kindergarten before their spell so has talent. Lovely run from three but does have more weight than the rest (56.5kg).

#4 Clevadude ($6.50)

Goes up a bit in class and won’t find this as easy as their first-up win at Moonee Valley at the start of the month but really consistent and has Glen Boss from gate four – both big pluses. Is being tipped for some Group 1 action this season including in the Caulfield Guineas going up to a mile so the 1100m might be a bit sharp but still expecting a good run.
