Brisbane horseman Kelso Wood has 2013 Golden Rose ambitions for his progressive chestnut colt Into The Red after the youngster broke their maiden status at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.
While most of Brisbane were enjoying a day off for the Royal Brisbane “Ekka” Show Holiday, Wood was trackside watching a contingent of his spring hopes strut their stuff including Not A Single Doubt three-year-old Into The Red.
Having run sixth on debut to Vo Heart in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) during the winter carnival in May, Into The Red returned a stronger and more mature looking racehorse this week.
“When he raced that day the rain came and he got bogged down and still ran a really respectable race,” Wood told AAP on Wednesday speaking of the horse’s debut.
“He pulled up very shin sore afterwards so we had to turn him out.”
They ran first-up on the back of a winning trial at Doomben putting in a nice effort to win the $50,000 Love My Wines QTIS 3YO Handicap (1000m) as the $2.30 favourite.
They did it easy too putting two and a half lengths on runner-up Tisani Tomso ($7) with $26 outsider boss Burr a distant third.
“He showed us from day one he can gallop and I’ve tested him out with Sizzling in trackwork and he’s always handled himself well,” Wood said post-win.
“He’ll take a lot of benefit from that run.
“He’s definitely got the potential with his ability to quicken and he put paid to them easily today.
“He probably wasn’t the best out but he mustered speed pretty quickly to take up a good spot.”
The win has Wood looking ahead to a Sydney Spring Racing Carnival raid where he will target Into The Red towards the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 14.
In the latest Golden Rose odds, led by Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper winner Overreach, Into The Red is listed as a $51 outsider.
Into The Red is also nominated for the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne on October 12, a bit of a pipe dream for Wood and connections.
They will take their next step towards a Golden Rose start in Sydney when they go to the $125,000 Group 3 The Run To The Roses (1200m) at Rosehill on August 31.
They won’t be alone heading interstate either with Wood’s spring contingent including stable stars including Sizzling, Belltone and Someday.
Wood confirmed his Queensland Guineas winner Sizzling, last seen running seventh to Linton in the Stradbroke Handicap, would resume at Warwick Farm Saturday week in the $125,000 Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m).
“He’s going great and I’ve got Someday and Belltone all on similar paths so they’ll probably have to run in the same races,” he said.
