Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Peter Snowden’s Golden Slipper runner-up Sidestep resumes racing at Rosehill Racecourse this Saturday and has opened top of the markets for their first-up run in the San Domenico Stakes 2013.
A field of nine three-year-olds, many heading towards the Group 1 features for their age during the Sydney and Melbourne Spring Carnivals, make up the field for this year’s $125,000 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m).
One of the early guides for horses in line for a shot at the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) back at the track on September 14, the San Domenico Stakes is also a great early spring race for punters to enjoy a bet on.
In the current San Domenico Stakes betting markets it is Exceed And Excel colt Sidestep, nominated for some of the majors in Melbourne including the $1 million Group 1 The BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 12, paying $3.20.
They haven’t raced since their second to Gai Waterhouse’s filly Overreach in the iconic Golden Slipper at this track back in early April.
A class youngster on the way up Sidestep is already a Group 2 winner (Pago Pago Stakes) and trailed well at the start of the month in the lead-up to this.
In a wide open betting race there are five other hopefuls under $10 in the markets including the $4.40 second pick Whittington.
Drawn ideally in gate three with Nash Rawiller booked for the ride, Waterhouse’s Tale Of The Cat colt is looking to atone for their 13th in the Golden Slipper last time out.
A stakes winner at Randwick by three lengths on debut last October, Whittington looks to have the fitness edge going in here with two Sydney trials over 1050m on their side with a win in July and a very close second on August 2.
The other single-figure fancies are then:
- #6 Whiskey Allround ($6) – Tony Gollan-trained Brisbane raider is well fancied despite not having raced since an eighth in the Todman Stakes in Sydney back in March, before that were second to subsequent Golden Slipper third placegetter Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) in the wet, has also won at home at Eagle Farm on a Good (3) so versatile and runs well fresh, two good trials in Queensland too
- #7 Windjammer ($7) – Bjorn Baker-trained youngster with Group 1 experience, albeit two failed efforts when ninth in the Golden Slipper and a distant 12th in the Sires Produce in Sydney last season, resumed at Rosehill on August 3 with an improved effort carrying 59kg to a good win over Mr Entertainer, only one second-up and not resuming so could work in their favour
- #2 Kuroshio ($9) – Stablemate to the favourite this fellow Snowden-trained Exceed And Excel colt was 14th in the Golden Slipper but showed earlier promise with a stakes win at Flemington last October and a Group 3 Caulfield win in February, doesn’t seem to relish the Sydney way of going but showed they’d matured with a Randwick trial victory over 800m on August 2
- #4 Never Can Tell ($9) – War Pass colt prepared by Anthony Cummings, has had four starts for two wins including the Listed Canonbury Stakes here over 1100m, last seen crossing a credible sixth in the Group 2 Todman Stakes 91200m) in March and is undefeated first-up
