Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
They are topping the pre-nomination betting markets for the ‘race that stops a nation’ and now the Darren Weir-trained Ballarat stayer Puissance De Lune is also the punters’ pick for their first-up run in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes 2013 on the weekend.
Running as Caulfield Race 6 on Saturday this year’s $220,000 Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) is shaping up as one of the most anticipated in years as it will host the returning run of Shamardal grey Puissance De Lune.
The five-year-old sits top of the PB Lawrence Stakes odds at a short $2.40 having been in top form during last year’s Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
They won the Listed Bendigo Cup (eight lengths) and the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (five lengths) that prep earning their spot as the Melbourne Cup top fancy before coming back for a one run autumn campaign.
In that start they shared victory in a dead heat for first with Budriguez in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 9.
While they have been out of action since due to bone chips that had to be removed from their knee, Weir has been bullish over their return following the horse’s nice lead-up work.
Jockey Glen Boss is also sure he’s on the right horse for the Lawrence and the big one on the first Tuesday of November having declared Puissance De Lune the 2013 Melbourne Cup winner after partnering with them last season.
There are then four other P.B. Lawrence Stakes hopes under $10 in the markets with:
- #1 Second Effort ($4.80) – Clinton McDonald’s evergreen Mossman seven-year-old is back to defend their title having taken this race out 12 months ago, come off the right form to do so too with a first-up third in the Monash and a last start win in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes, right track, right distance, right time, wrong rival in Puissance De Lune?
- #2 Launay ($7) – Runner-up to Second Effort first-up in the Bletchingly, Peter Snowden’s fellow seven-year-old veteran is also doing everything right and showing little sign of slowing down, will take improvement off that first run and going up to the 1400m will be very competitive, winner over the distance in the Listed TAB Stakes at Flemington in March and will relishing getting back up to it
- #9 Ajeeb ($9) – Progressive Al Maher four-year-old was seventh in the Australian Guineas in their first look at a black type and a mile during the autumn, since then have won back-to-back in July over 1300m and 1400m most recently over this track and distance from a wide gate with Craig Newitt aboard, get Stephen Baster and gate three on Saturday
- #5 Under The Sun ($9.50) – No Excuse Needed five-year-old from the stables of Gai Waterhouse, has really good Sydney form around this type of class and distance including a three and a half length Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) win in July, need the sting out of the ground however so will be hoping for some rain and also haven’t run in Melbourne since November of 2011
Following closely at double figures are then the likes of recent Sir John Monash Stakes winner Pago Rock ($10) and the Peter Moody-trained Adelaide Guineas champ High Esteem ($15) resuming here in open company.
