Black type racing gets underway at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday with the running of the Vain Stakes 2013 where a small but exciting field of young colts and geldings will strut their stuff ahead of the spring majors.
Set to kick off the Group racing on PB Lawrence Stakes Day, this year’ $135,000 Group 3 Legacy 90th Anniversary Vain Stakes (1100m) will run as Race 4 at 2:00pm (AEST) and punters are well advised to take note.
The field is made up of nine hopefuls, two of which are on debut, and could prove a telling guide for some of the upcoming Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Group 1’s including the $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) back at the track on October 12.
In the latest Vain Stakes odds two gallopers are battling for favouritism with the Peter Snowden-trained Safeguard with the No. 1 saddlecloth narrowly winning at this stage.
Drawn in gate three with Kerrin McEvoy to ride the Exceed And Excel colt is undefeated to date having won on debut at Flemington in December before resuming in April with a victorious performance in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m).
They’re back in Melbourne for this assignment and with their flawless record are tipped to retain their unbeaten status paying $3.10 to win again.
Hot on their heels in the Vain Stakes betting markets at $3.60 is then Il Cavallo out wide in gate nine.
Prepared by Victoria’s head trainer Peter Moody the Choisir colt won their debut by four lengths over 900m at Sandown in March.
They couldn’t match it with Safeguard and the like at their next run however when travelling to Randwick for the Kindergarten Stakes where they were beaten eight lengths into seventh.
Tipped to improve when resuming here however Il Cavallo will appreciate getting back to the Melbourne way of racing and from all reports have matured well physically and mentally over the break.
Most of the field is at single-figures in this hard to predict event including the $4.80 third pick Hill Spy.
Prepared locally by Robert Smerdon, the O’Reilly three-year-old won their debut at Morphettville back in July and race in Victoria for the first time here in a test of their true ability.
Rounding out those under $10 are then:
- #4 Clevadude ($6) – Looks a nice price for this Caulfield Guineas-bound young gun who has won three of their four starts to date including their maiden assignment this time in at Moonee Valley on August 3, are yet to win over further than 1000m however and even trainer Rick Hore-Lacy has some concerns over their ability to stay after a shock 14th in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Handicap over 1200m back in January
- #2 Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($6.50) – David Hayes-trained colt has plenty of form around the best of this age group, best known for their Blue Diamond second which is one of their three previous Group 1 starts that also include a fifth in both the Golden Slipper (1200m) and the Champagne Stakes (1600m) in Sydney, good Caulfield form and first-up over this distance looks spot on
- #8 Duran ($9) – Unraced Tale Of The Cat colt from local stables of Tony Vasil, hasn’t had an official trial but there’s some hype around them that they need to prove is warranted
