2013 Regal Roller Stakes Field & Odds – Top Three Hard To Split

A trio of horses is currently installed as the equal favourites to win one of the support races on the PB Lawrence Stakes Day program at Caulfield this Saturday with Serene Star, Academy Jack and Amah Rock heading the markets for the Regal Roller Stakes 2013.

One of five black type features held in Melbourne on the weekend, the $120,000 Listed Australian Defence Force Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) has this year drawn a final field of 12 hopefuls.

Heading the field and weights with 60kg is the Peter Snowden-trained Bello, $11 in the latest markets, who has gate 11 as well as the hefty kilos to overcome.

The Exceed And Excel gelding was a back-to-back Sydney winner in March including their Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket (1400m) success before coming back in early June for another win this time at Flemington.

However it is three other lightly-weighted runners that the bookies are tipping for the win with Serene Star (54.5kg), Academy Jack (54kg) and Amah Rock (54kg) all paying $4.60 to win the Regal Roller.

Drawn in gate five with Adam McCabe in the saddle, Michael Kent’s veteran mare Serene Star has had good recent form in Melbourne over the past few months including a second and fourth at Caulfield carrying big weights (60kg and 58kg) so the drop back here will suit.

Academy Jack also comes into this on the back of some very nice winter form.

The Royal Academy six-year-old, prepared by Dale Short, enjoyed a Mornington win two back before coming to Caulfield on July 27 and running a brave second to the defending PB Lawrence Stakes winner Second Effort in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) as a $41 outsider.

Amah Rock meanwhile has the inside running from gate one on Saturday and will have ace hoop Craig Williams in the saddle.

Peter Morgan’s Fastnet Rock five-year-old is looking to return to form in their resuming run following a dead last finish at Flemington last time out in mid-December.

Other notable Regal Roller hopes this year then include the Stephen Brown-trained Australia Stakes winner from January Sea Lord ($11) with 58kg in gate two, Red Ransom seven-year-old from Adelaide Dee Bee Nine ($13) and local Not A Single Doubt four-year-old Colicchio ($17) who is the real unknown in the field having had just the one previous run when winner on debut at Moonee Valley in December.
