The last on a top eight-race Caulfield program in Melbourne this Saturday is the Cockram Stakes 2013 for the mares, the field and betting markets for which are now out.
One of four Group status races on PB Lawrence Stakes Day this year, the $150,000 Group 3 KS Environmental Cockram Stakes (1200m) is set to run as Race 8 bringing things to a close at 4:40pm (AEST).
Originally the mares-only event attracted a full field of 16 hopefuls.
However the early scratching of the Chris Waller-trained Catkins, who was drawn out wide in gate 14, has left 15 competitors.
Heading the Cockram Stakes field and weights with 58kg is the Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison co-trained Oasis Bloom first-up here.
The Al Maher four-year-old boasts plenty of class and enjoyed a stellar spring season last prep.
Her best efforts included a Group 2 win in the Stocks Stakes over the Moonee Valley mile in September and her last start fourth when defeated under a length by Appearance in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
While she’s got the big weight to overcome Oasis is still the Cockram Stakes betting market mover having firmed into $12.
The early favourite in the race meanwhile is the in-form Octavia paying $3.10 to win her second on the trot.
Drawn in gate eight with Kerrin McEvoy to ride the Michael Moroney-trained Holy Roman Emperor four-year-old has had three runs this season all over 1200m and all of which she’s run inside the top two.
After two narrow runner-up titles when defeated a nose, she was able to draw away from her rivals at Caulfield on July 27 when carrying just 51k to a three and a half length victory.
Winner also of the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) here in February it will be a notable jump in weights to the 56kg she’s been allocated on Saturday, but the bookies are taking no chances.
There are then four other mares under double-figures in the current WW Cockram Stakes odds with:
- #3 Lady Melksham ($5) – Carries 57kg with ace hoop Glen Boss aboard but should get a gun run from gate one, John Sadler’s Artie Schiller mare won this race first-up last August over a smart field in the mud but is versatile having also won first-up in March this year at Moonee Valley over 955m, was disappointing when a well beaten eighth last time out at Flemington in April but runs well fresh and had claims to go back-to-back
- #7 Kneeling ($6.50) – Out wide in barrier 12, Peter Moody’s Encosta De Lago five-year-old has work to do but boasts the fitness edge, won at Brisbane and then the Sunshine Coast in June before her last start second at Moonee Valley this month
- #11 A Time For Julia ($8.50) – Lightly-raced up-and-comer also prepared locally by Moody, has had just the three starts to date, barrier 13 to overcome here but promise and class to do so as a last start winner over the 1400m here back in October, should have matured over the break and ready for her four-year-old season
- #5 You’re So Good ($9) – Savabeel four-year-old trained by Nigel Blackiston, enjoyed a lovely autumn including their second int eh Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) and second against the boys when runner-up to Ferlax in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington, also won the Listed Alexandra Stakes over the mile by a good margin before bumming out in Sydney’s Vinery Stud over 2000m, back here and first-up should be ready to roll back home in Melbourne
