Melbourne Raid for 2013 Spring Stakes Winner Just Discreet

Morphettville horseman Phillip Stokes is weighing up Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival options for his exciting mare Just Discreet after her first-up win in the Spring Stakes 2013 at home over the weekend.

The five-year-old daughter of Exceed And Excel picked up on her good form from last prep, which included a black type win in the Matrice Stakes and a credible eighth to Platelet in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic, when resuming on Saturday in the $115,000 Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m).

In a race touted as a telling spring guide, the locally-trained winner was able to beat home a field of highly fancied rivals including last year’s winner and Group 1 Emirates Stakes winner Happy Trails ($2.80F) who was a luckless fifth.

Ridden to perfection by Adrian Patterson in her first run in five months, Just Discreet ($8) was able to finish strongly and put one and a half lengths on the Peter Moody-trained runner-up and early pace-setter Meliora ($6).

Just a nose away third from then then was Richard Jolly’s third placed Golden Penny ($13).

It was the ideal new season start for Just Discreet who could now be interstate bound to vie for some bigger prize money after pleasing her trainer no end.

“I was upbeat about her today,” Stokes told Adelaide Now on Saturday.

“She had a jumpout two weeks ago and went very well.

“I thought she was more forward than these other horses and it paid off.

“She got in the perfect spot behind Peter’s horse and I was pretty confident a long way out.”

Stokes now plans to run Just Discreet once more in Adelaide for the $80,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) back at Morphettville on August 24 before heading up to Victoria.

“She’ll go to the Penny Edition and then we’ll try to get one of those Listed races over the Melbourne carnival,” he said.

“It’s the logical race, it’s on our home doorstep and then we’ll work out what to do after that.”

Happy Trails meanwhile is still on track to shoot for their second Group 1 trophy when backing up in the $350,000 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 31.

Trainer Paul Beshara didn’t lose any confidence in their unplaced Spring Stakes run after the horse got caught in traffic and failed to get into the mix at the top of the straight on Saturday.
