Missile Stakes 2013 Tips & Selections

Group racing gets underway for another season in Sydney this Saturday with the 2013 Missile Stakes at Royal Randwick, the Races.com.au team’s tips and betting selections for which are detailed below.

There may have been just eight acceptors for this year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 McGrath Real Estate Agents Missile Stakes (1200m) but among those are three past Group 1 winners.

Red hot favourite in the Missile Stakes odds and the one to beat is the Joe Pride-trained Rain Affair in gate five.

Paying an odds-on price of $1.65 and firming, Rain Affair won this race two years ago and has gone on to run against the best in the business at elite level throughout the past couple of seasons.

They earned their favouritism for this when blitzing a barrier trial at the track last week by nine and a half lengths showing they were ready to kick off another killer spring campaign.

The other shorties in the markets are then the grand old galloper Hay List ($6) also resuming and recent Civic Stakes winner Mic Mac ($6).

So are these three the ones to lock into your Missile Stakes trifecta bets?

Or is there value to be found a little further down the markets from the likes of Centennial Park ($17) who always runs well fresh, or reigning Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis ($17) drawn for a run in gate four?

1st: #2 Rain Affair ($1.65)

They’re the odds-on favourite and market mover and we’re sticking with them. Has loads of class racing against champions all last prep including a fourth to Black Caviar (TJ Smith Stakes) and second to All Too Hard (All Aged Stakes). Ignore their 14th last start in the Doomben 10,000, that was at the end of a prep, going up in distance and coming off a big run in the mud for their BTC Cup second. Look instead to that flying trial here at the start of the month, no wonder they’re being hailed as Sydney’s fastest horse for the spring. Also loves a wet track and that’s what they’re likely to get on Saturday so don’t think they’ll catch him on a Heavy.

2nd: #3 Mic Mac ($6)

Veteran eight-year-old from the Scone stables of Paul Messara, this rejuvenated sprinter showed they hadn’t forgotten how to win when breaking a 16-month drought to win the Civic Stakes (1350m) at Rosehill two back with 59kg. Were brave in defeat last start back at the Gardens when second, with 60.5kg in the Winter Stakes, on soft ground. Weight-for-age is the go and they get that here. Also liked their Galaxy run when sixth to Temple Of Boom back in April with 58kg, beaten just 1.5 lengths.

3rd: #1 Hay List ($6)

Think the bookies have this right and believe in a small field John McNair’s injury-prone triple Group 1 champ can run a place. Don’t think they’re ever going to be as good as they were at their peak when, unfortunately, their Group 1 tally was kept modest thanks to the freakish Black Caviar. Do think they can be competitive in a Group 3 first-up but, even after their two trials left a lot to be desired.
