Black type racing at Belmont continues for the end of winter in WA this Saturday with the running of the always popular 2013 Belmont Newmarket, betting tips and selections for the handicap clash detailed below.
This year’s $100,000 Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m) is scheduled to run as Belmont Park Race 7 at 4:10pm (local time) and originally drew 14 acceptors.
The final field however is down to 12 following the early scratching of #11 Modello and #14 Times Are Changing who were drawn wide in gates 13 and 10 respectively.
Belmont Newmarket betting odds are now out at the major bookies and of the remaining hopefuls it comes as no surprise that the flying Settle Strada has opened top of the markets.
Sitting at a current quote of $2.30, Doug Harrison’s Strada five-year-old is nearing odds-on territory after coming up trumps in the barrier draw with gate four.
They will be ridden by regular hoop Patrick Carbery who has guided them to their two wins this time in, Settle Strada coming off victories in both the Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) and most recently the Listed H.G. Bolton Sprint (1200m) on July 27.
Defeating many of these same rivals in the Bolton Sprint, Settle Strada also did it on a Slow (7) track and will appreciate the firmer ground on Saturday.
They do however go up from 56kg to 58.5kg giving some weight away to some classy rivals.
Just three other runners are under double figures however with:
- #10 Kalahaar ($4.80) – Bookies are tipping a repeat of the HG Bolton Quinella with Choisir five-year-old Kalahaar to run second to Settle Strada again, this time they carry just 54.5kg however after having 56kg on their back last start which could give them the advantage?
- #8 Dueton ($5) – In-form four-year-old from the Ascot stables of Eric Wake, has won their last two at this track in as many weeks and race for a third Saturday on the trot here as the progressive youngster goes up to 1200m for the first time this prep, experience up to 1500m last season though so distance should be a non-issue
- #2 Zester ($9) – One of the more experienced in the field, Dan Morton’s Danewin seven-year-old is an old hand at these races and should get a gun run from barrier two, needs to be strong with 59kg but deserving of that weight which they carried last start for a third in the Bolton, Group 1 performer and should be fit
Other notable hopes at longer prices then include Morton’s other 59kg top-weight Belora ($18) out to improve on their 12th in the Strickland Stakes here last start and Chris Gangemi’s Flying Spur gelding The Entourage ($18).
