Settle Strada Leads 2013 Belmont Newmarket Field

David Harrison’s last start HG Bolton Sprint winner Settle Strada backs up at Belmont Park in WA this weekend in the Belmont Newmarket 2013 looking for their third win on the trot at the track.

There are currently 13 sprinters left in contention for the $100,000 Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m) following the early scratching of #11 Modello.

One of the top fancies is Strada five-year-old Settle Strada who has won their first two runs of this prep at Belmont Park during July.

Both were also at stakes level after they beat home The Entourage first-up in the Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) before their one and a quarter length effort over Kalahaar in the Listed H.G. Bolton Sprint (1200m) on July 27.

On Saturday jockey Patrick Carbery retains the ride as the duo prepare to jump from a nice barrier four draw, the only query being the increase from 56kg last start to 58.5kg.

Harrison however knows his horse earned the weight and on their day can handle it.

“He is a big horse so the extra weight should not cause him too much concern,” Harrison told The West Australian.

Harrison will also be represented by Sir Hallowell in the far outside barrier who will have apprentice Joseph Azzopardi aboard despite it not affecting their 54.5kg allocation.

“Joseph has been doing a lot of work and the owner (Craig Thompson) decided to give him a reward,” Harrison said.

Bolton Sprint runner-up Kalahaar from the Albany stables of Steve Wolfe is also set to back up in the Belmont Newmarket as is the third placed Zester.

Local Danewin seven-year-old Zester, a multiple Group 1 performer, is one of the equal top weights in the Belmont Newmarket field.

The Daniel Morton-trained galloper will carry 59kg, which they had for their Bolton third last start, as will their stablemate Belora who was last seen running a disappointing 12th in the Group 3 Strickland Stakes (2000m) at the track on June 29.

Belora won’t get any relief from apprentice Jordan Mallyon either with apprentices unable to claim.

Also high up the weights are Blackfriars mare Pop Culture (58.5kg) on the rails and HG Bolton fourth placed Highly Toxic (56kg) with gate three for their second-up run.

Pop Culture was one of the top performers last summer during the Ascot Carnival but has been hasn’t been out to her pet distances this time in.

Winner of the Listed Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) in November she went on to run a close fourth to Luckygray in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) before another stakes success in the Listed WA St Leger (2100m) in December.

Her last run of that prep was her fourth when only two lengths off Talent Show in the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Day.

This winter though Pop Culture has finished dead last in both the Beaufine Stakes and the Bolton (10th and 11th) and could struggle to stay in touch again over the 1200m here.

Aside from the likely favourite Settle Strada, the only other last start winner in the mix is then Dueton.

Eric Wake’s Due Sasso four-year-old also vies for their third straight turf triumph following back-to-back Belmont Park victories over the past two weeks.

Many Belmont Newmarket runners are using the race as a lead-up to the prestigious $130,000 Listed Hannan’s Handicap (1400m) at Kalgoorlie on September 18
