Spartan Eagle Tops 2013 Darwin Cup Odds

This afternoon the top race at the Top End takes place at Fannie Bay Racecourse with the flying Spartan Eagle topping the Darwin Cup 2013 odds.

Bob Richards‘ local Niello six-year-old has been blitzing their rivals over the past couple of months shooting for their impressive fifth win on the trot in the $200,000 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup (2000m).

A full field of 12 gallopers is engaged for this year’s race with the three emergencies now officially withdrawn.

Current favourite in the Darwin Cup betting markets paying $4.20 is Spartan Eagle who has retained their spot despite a horror barrier draw.

Last seen winning the traditional Darwin Cup lead-up putting a minimum six lengths on their competitors in the Metric Mile over 1600m at the track on July 27, Spartan Eagle must overcome the far outside barrier today.

Aside from the widely-drawn favourite there are then four other single figure chances in the Darwin Cup markets with:

  • #12 Host Of The Party ($6) – Stephen Brown-trained local hope who comes off three impressive runs, the last two for their new trainer at Fannie Bay, shooting for the triple crown after winning both the Darwin Guineas and NT Derby as a three-year-old last month, right form, nice age, great weight (54.5kg) and perfect draw (2) with Dwayne Dunn to ride
  • #4 Extra Zero ($7) – Veteran Danzero seven-year-old from David Hayes’ Flemington stables, no doubt had loads of class in their day but could be at the end, two last runs were horrors when 10th at Flemington and then beating just one rival with eighth (20.5 lengths away) to Spartan Eagle in the Metric Mile, bit short in the markets for us
  • #7 The Big Steel ($8) – Stablemate to Host Of The Party, Urgent Request seven-year-old won their past two at the track most recently over 1900m on July 20, distance looks ideal and has form against better horses in Melbourne during the autumn
  • #Red Colossus ($9) – Testa Rossa seven-year-old comes off a good fourth at the track, albeit over a short 1100m, carrying 62kg and have another big weight (61kg) here, have been through the hands of a number of trainers and raced over staying distance their whole career including a second in the 2010 SA Derby over 2500m

In a relatively open betting race there are then a host of other double figure chances with genuine claims including Brown’s third runner Bolton ($10) who was a devastatingly close second last year and the dual defending champ Hawks Bay ($12).

Having run in the past four Darwin Cups, for two wins and victories in the last two editions, veteran has a big task ahead to improve on their Metric Mile seventh and carry 65kg to victory for a Darwin Cup hat-trick.
