Lucky Penny After 2013 Myer Classic Money

One half of the Whittlesea-based Victorian training duo along with Peter Morgan, Craig Widdison has confirmed plans to target the Myer Classic 2013 this Melbourne Cup Carnival with consistent mare Lucky Penny.

Formerly prepared by Peter Morgan, the Keep The Faith five-year-old has been with her new trainers since around this time last year.

Her debut for Morgan & Widdison was a disappointing one however.

Running for the first time since posting three straight wins in her opening career starts, including the Listed Laelia Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville that May, Lucky Penny suffered her first defeat when debuting for the new stable.

She was dead last behind Lady Melksham in the Group 3 WW Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield last August failing to handle the Heavy (10) track.

It was then a lengthy eight months on the sidelines before her next run.

Showing she’d come through her break well Lucky Penny won first-up at Caulfield in an open handicap for mares over 1400m at Caulfield in April.

She then backed up in May going to Adelaide where she was far from disgraced when a long neck away second to subsequent Stradbroke Handicap champ Linton in the Group 3 RA Le Stakes (1600m).

Now Widdison is looking at first-up options for the lightly-raced mare again to kick off her spring prep, leaning towards the $80,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville on August 24.

While her exact campaign is yet to be mapped out they are fairly confident her grand final will be on Victoria Derby Day, Saturday November 2, in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington Racecourse.

“Her main aim is the Myer Classic and we’ll just take her along slowly and space her runs towards that race,” Widdison told Racing Victoria.
