Under The Sun Heads Winter Challenge Odds 2013

Gai Waterhouse’s last start Winter Stakes winner will be out for a Rosehill double on Saturday with Under The Sun to jump favourite in the 2013 Winter Challenge odds.

The No Excuse Needed gelding Under The Sun has been in top form this prep backing up from a brave Civic Stakes second to beat home Mic Mac by three and a half lengths in the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) on July 20.

They back up at the same track on Saturday this time going up slightly in distance for the $100,000 Listed Winter Challenge (1500m).

After carrying only 54.5kg to victory last start the now five-year-old goes up a full three kilos this weekend but has another sweet draw (barrier two) with Thomas Huet retaining the ride.

Despite the weight rise the bookies believe they are the one to beat again and have Under The Sun topping the Winter Challenge markets at a quote of $3.30.

It’s a relatively open market too with four other single figure fancies including the $4.80 second pick Bayrir.

Drawn on the rails with Hugh Bowman to ride the highly spruiked Chris Waller-trained French import debuts down under in this carrying the 59kg top-weight.

Exactly how they will stack up in Australia is yet to be known but there’s certainly hype around them as they are a former Grade 1 winner in the US.

The other hopefuls under $10 in Winter Challenge betting are then:

  • #9 Less Is More ($5.50) – Another French import this one prepared by David Vandyke, has been racing in Australia for some time most recently in Brisbane for the winter carnival where their last run was a mid-field eighth in the Brisbane Cup, drop back in distance will be flying home
  • #8 Coup Ay Tee ($6) – Nice gate three draw for another from the Waller stables, Danske gelding was a brave third in the Winter Stakes and should handle the 1500m despite their 10th over the distance two back – that was in the mud so forgive
  • #4 Bold Glance ($8) – Norm Hilton-trained eight-year-old still racing like that of a horse half their age, third in the Natski Handicap two back (where Coup Ay Tee was 10th) before a Winter Stakes fourth, appreciate the 1500m and drops half a kilo in weights too
