She is just outside the top half of betting for this weekend’s 2013 Winter Challenge but Pretty Pins has what it takes to give the favourites a run for their money according to her jockey Jim Cassidy.
Set to run as Rosehill Race 6 on Saturday the $100,000 Listed Winter Challenge (1500m), which kicks off stakes racing for the new season, has this year drawn a final field of 10 hopefuls, half of which are under $10 in the latest bookmaker.com.au markets.
Those markets are led by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Under The Sun at $3.30 who comes off a sensational win in the Winter Stakes over 1400m here two weeks back.
At double figures a little further down the Winter Challenge odds at $15 is then Pretty Pins who has drawn nicely mid-field in barrier five.
Prepared by John Thompson the five-year-old Pins mare also comes via the Winter Stakes from July 20 where she finished four lengths away fifth to Under The Sun.
For that run she was ridden by Nathan Berry and was perhaps a touch unlucky in the run.
Veteran hoop Cassidy, who enjoyed five Group 1 winning rides for the 2012-13 racing season, takes over the reigns on Saturday and, having watched her Winter Stakes effort, believes she’s capable of improvement.
“I had a look at the video of her last run and she probably just wasn’t suited by the tempo of that race,” Cassidy, 50, said according to AAP.
“If it’s truly run (this Saturday), I think she’ll run well.”
Pretty Pins again gets in on the 54kg minimum, meeting Chris Waller’s French import Bayrir a full five kilos better, and could make a nice inclusion to exotic bets.
