Bunbry training duo Ross and Clint Price will assess the next-up performance of Reimbursement at Belmont at the end of the month before confirming a trip to Kalgoorlie for another shot at the 2013 Hannan’s Handicap in September.
State City seven-year-old Reminbrusement hasn’t raced since their close second to Texan in last year’s $130,000 Listed Hannan’s Handicap (1400m) at the Goldfields.
Their extended spell was an injury-enforced one after co-trainer Ross Price found them caught in a fence following a storm during their spell in Capel.
“The winds were 150km/h that night and we found him with a piece of tree caught up in his tail and he’d gone through two fences,” Price explained to The West Australian.
“Wire was wrapped around his pastern joint.
“We weren’t sure at the time whether the wire had cut through to the bone.”
They are nearing their much awaited return however with the gelding to run first-up in the $80,000 Listed Goodwood Sprint (1300m) at Belmont Park on August 24 following a good third in a Lark Hill trail over 950m on July 29 when beaten just half a length by Glintz.
“It’s been a long time since he’d raced and he might have got a little tired near the line,” Price said of their trial run.
“Everything seems to be fine so far but we would just like to see how the injury holds up in a race.”
The other first-up option for them was Saturday week’s $80,000 Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m).
As that is a quality handicap however his trainers knew their 102 rating would likely attract too hefty a weight making the weight-for-age Goodwood the preferred option.
Reimbursement contested the Goodwood Sprint 12 months ago running sixth to Cavallo Pazzo ahead of their Hannan’s Handicap second.
It is shaping up as a nice edition of the Hannan’s Handicap this year too with other horses heading towards the lucrative middle distance sprint including H.G. Bolton Sprint winner Settle Strada.
A multiple Group performer, Reimbursement hasn’t won a race since their Listed Bunbury Stakes (1400m) victory at home in March last year.
Their other notable runs that prep included a second to superstar Luckygray in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) last June and a fourth to the same Group 1 champ in the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) also at Belmont in the winter.
