The Doomben Cup 2018 takes centre stage in...
It is shaping up as a tight race betting wise for the Coffs Harbour Cup 2013 this Thursday but one favourite has emerged from the pack with World Wide dominating the early markets.
Six of the 13 hopefuls in the mix for the $80,000 Coffs Harbour Gold Cup (1600m) this year are paying under $10 in the current markets which are led by the Bede Murray-trained World Wide.
Sitting at a quote of $3.50 in the Coffs Harbour Cup odds the Universal Prince seven-year-old is out to improve on their last start failure at Rosehill.
On July 20 they finished 10th in a 2000m Benchmark 90 handicap, an effort the bookies are tipping them to improve on as they drop back to the mile for the Cup.
World Wide also comes back from 59kg, which they’ve carried for their three most recent runs in Sydney, to a far more manageable 55.5kg on Thursday with regular rider Kathy O’Hara staying on.
Second fancy in the markets at $6.50 is then Namsarai drawn nicely in barrier three.
Kris Lees’ Broadmeadow-based veteran was a winner over the mile at Warwick Farm in the wet two back but have been beaten in two of their runs since.
They get in on the 54kg minimum however and will be ridden by Christian Reith.
The other single-figure chances in the Coffs Harbour Cup odds are then:
- #1 Kontiki Park ($7) – Gai Waterhouse-trained top weight must overcome 60kg so they give lots of weight away to some quality rivals but Waterhouse originally entered four and this is her only acceptor so she must rate the Thorn park eight-year-old a chance
- #2 Prince Of Capers ($7) – Tony McEvoy-trained Arena gelding carries the next biggest weight (57kg) and is wide in gate 11, gets the advantage of pro Sydney hoop Hugh Bowman coming for the ride however, will need to improve on their last start run in June over the Randwick mile but when beaten over eight lengths by Thursday’s favourite World Wide
- #6 Hour Of Peril ($8) – One of four locally-trained hopes in the Cup, is co-owned by the racing club’s chairman and was a recent purchase from Patinack Farm, has won at Listed level over the mile in Brisbane before so no queries about the 1600m, also won their last start in the Maclean Cup at Grafton a couple of weeks back so is in form
- #10 Single Spirit ($9) – Great price on this Taree-based youngster who turns four on Thursday, the Not A Single Doubt gelding was the emphatic winner of the Sawtell Cup at this track (over 1516m) in the mud on July 21 and are out to do it again with the country’s most prolific jockey Robert Thompson retaining the ride
Other hopes at longer odds out for an upset that could prove awesome value on Coffs Harbour Cup Day then include the likes of Mr Armstrong ($11) and the reigning Coffs Harbour Cup winner Pepperwood ($15).
