While wary it may come up a little too quick for his recovering super filly, Leon Corstens is hopeful the Cox Plate 2013 bound Commanding Jewel can make her much awaited return at Caulfield Racecourse on August 17.
Impressive three length winner of the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at the Caulfield track back in October last year, where she defeated subsequent Crown Oaks winner Dear Demi, Commands three-year-old Commanding Jewel has spent the past nine and a bit months recovering from a front joint injury.
She sustained the nasty setback during track work as she prepared for an autumn comeback, missing the entire season.
Having worked hard at getting his stable ace back to full fitness, the Kyneton-based Corstens is now praying she can return for a successful Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival return and put the drama of the past year behind her.
Back in full work for some time now, Corstens has been stepping up Commanding Jewel’s load and ran her over 2400m on Tuesday morning.
“She worked over half a mile this morning and I’m very pleased with her,” Corstens said according to AAP.
“She seems to be coming along very nicely.”
He’s now considering first-up options for her spring debut including the fast approaching $150,000 Group 3 WW Cockram Stakes (1200m) in a few weeks’ time.
“I was thinking about running her in the Cockram Stakes but it might be coming up a just little too quick for her,” he said.
If all goes well with Commanding Jewel Corstens could be looking at his first ever runner in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship as he plans to target her for the $3 million Group 1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.
In the futures Cox Plate odds Commanding Jewel is rated a $26 chance.
Sydney Autumn 3YO Triple Crown winner It’s A Dundeel is the early $4.40 favourite followed by Australian Cup champ Super Cool at $7.
Commanding Jewel’s star half-sister and 2011 Thousand Guineas winner Atlantic Jewel, who hasn’t raced since winning the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) in April last year, then occupies the third line of Cox Plate betting at $7.50.
The official 2013 Cox Plate nominations close next Tuesday, August 6, and will be published right here at Races.com.au after their release.
