2013 Coffs Harbour Gold Cup Field for Thursday

This Thursday, July 1, the Northern New South Wales coast will come to life for the running of the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup 2013, the final field for which has now been released.

Kontiki Park

Originally attracting a total of 14 acceptances this year’s $80,000 Carlton Mid 2013 Coffs Harbour Gold Cup (1600m) is down to 13 runners following the early withdrawal of #12 Geronimo Jack who had drawn the inside alley.

Heading the Coffs Harbour Cup field and weights is a smart Sydney based galloper from the Gai Waterhouse stables, Kontiki Park, the only one of her four original nominees to be accepted.

Drawn in gate eight with Adam Hyeronimus to ride the veteran Thorn Park eight-year-old is out to improve on some poor recent form including their last start eighth to stablemate Under The Sun in the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) on July 20.

A step down in class and going up to the mile should suit them however but they still must overcome the 60kg top-weight.

They showed they could handle those kind of kilos two back at Rosehill however when finishing a brave fourth to Merlin Mustang in the wet for the Natski Handicap over 1500m.

Following Kontiki Park in the weights on 57kg is then the Tony McEvoy-trained Prince Of Capers who has a double digit gate but top Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman in the saddle who won the Coffs Harbour Cup back in 2001 on the Gerald Ryan-trained Danyon.

The other hopes over the 54kg minimum on Thursday are then World Wide (55.5kg) and the defending Coffs Harbour Cup winner Pepperwood (55kg) from the Brisbane stables of Liam Birchley.

A rising nine-year-old, Easy Rocking gelding Pepperwood has been racing well back home including their second in the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) at Doomben two back.

Meanwhile there are three last start winners in the Coffs Harbour Cup that are likely to start near the top of the betting markets.

The first is Stephen Farley’s Street Cry gelding Gazza Guru, who also turns nine on Thursday, coming off a sensational winning effort in the South Grafton Cup over the mile on July 7.

One of four locally-trained hopes this year, Hour Of Peril also enjoyed a Grafton win last start taking out the Maclean Cup (1406m) by half a length in their first run for new trainer John Nikolic.

The other local hopes are then outsiders Toucan Ukelele, the Joe Janiak-trained Bondit and Brett Dodson’s Tycoon Ruler mare Erinsea who was third behind Pepperwood 12 months ago.

The final last-start winner out to post back-to-back wins meanwhile is then Ross Stitt’s impressive three-year-old Single Spirit who has a gun draw with barrier five.

They should relish that gate after overcoming barrier 14 of 14 at Coffs Harbour on July 21 to score an easy two and a half length win in the Sawtell Cup (1516m) run on a Heavy (10) track.
