Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Bunbury horseman Michael Lane will give his soon-to-be three-year-old Spin Da Wheels a conservative spring – summer campaign over the coming months with their long term aim being next autumn’s 2014 WATC Derby.
Hard Spun gelding Spin Da Wheels has won three of their eight career starts to date including their past two on the trot just seven days apart at Belmont Park this month.
Last Saturday they enjoyed the give out of the Slow (7) track and held on in a close finish with Star Of Husson to win another Westspeed Nursery 2YO Handicap, a series of races they have run exclusively in at their past six starts, over the 1400m.
They will have their final run of this campaign Saturday week before going out for a well-earned spell, Lane confident they can win again having pulled through their weekend win in excellent order.
“You wouldn’t even know he’d been around,” Lane told The West Australian on Sunday.
“He ate up last night and went for a bit of a walk this morning and was as fresh as anything.
“He might have one more run now and have eight weeks off.”
While there’s been talk about their Perth Summer Racing Carnival potential, Spin Da Wheels will not be rushed.
The obvious aim would be for them to target the prestigious $350,000 Group 2 W.A. Guineas (1600m) at Ascot on Railway Stakes Day, November 23.
Lane however has already made the early decision to bypass the 2013 WA Guineas and instead set Spin Da Wheels on a path towards the $400,000 Group 2 W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m) on April 12 next year.
“We think he will get ground so we will put him out for the spring and bring him back for the Derby,” Lane said.
“Expecting him to run early at Ascot is asking a bit too much.”
It is a strategy that has worked out well for the past three consecutive WATC Derby winners who also missed their respective WA Guineas with Dreamaway (2011), Rohan (2012) and Mystic Prince (2013).
