Uncle George Earns 2014 Perth Cup Target

The Perth Cup 2014 on New Year’s Day in WA has emerged as a genuine summer assignment for the progressive Uncle George after Jim Taylor’s rising five-year-old won at Belmont Park over the weekend.

Breaking a lengthy nine month winning drought the Bletchley Park gelding enjoyed the Slow (7) track conditions last Saturday to beat home Operational by one and a quarter lengths in the $50,000 Westspeed Stayers Bonus (2200m).

It was a nice effort and confirmed the Bullsbrook-based Taylor’s suspicions they would make a stayer to watch this coming Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

Bred to stay, Uncle George was tested over the mile and a half as a three-year-old when prepared by Frankie Maynard running sixth to Rohan in the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) last year.

They have come on since then however and Taylor is confident the $500,000 Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) back over that distance on January 1, 2014, isn’t too ambitious an aim for them.

“He seems a better horse at Ascot,” Taylor told The West Australian.

“I think he is right up to the Perth Cup if he gets back to his summer form.

“He will have one more start in two weeks and then have a let-up for the Cup.”

Uncle George could also be joined in next year’s Perth Cup field by stablemate Hel Cool who Taylor is also considering for the classic.

The Helenus six-year-old, seven on Thursday, was previously prepared by Rhona Mac Philomey who prepared them for their third to Black Tycoon in the Geraldton Cup back in April.

They’ve had just the two runs for Taylor.

Their first-up effort was disappointing when 10th to Black Romeo over the 1400m at Belmont Park on July 13, an effort they improved on going up to the mile last Saturday to run a close third to Fanicio.

“He is a problem at the barrier but if I can get him behaving better there he could go on,” Taylor said.

“He is only a 70-rater so he might be able to pick up a few staying races over the next few weeks.”
