Second Effort Scores with 2013 Bletchingly Stakes Win

Clinton McDonald’s locally-trained galloper Second Effort thrived in Caulfield’s feature race over the weekend winning their second black type trophy in the Bletchingly Stakes 2013.

Winner of the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) in the mud at their home track last August, six-year-old Mossman gelding Second Effort thrived second-up at the same course on Saturday in the last Group race of the season the $150,000 Group 3 Sportingbet Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).

They showed promise in their resuming run a fortnight earlier when third behind Pago Rock and Elite Elle in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m), both of whom finished behind Second Effort in the Bletchingly.

But in Bletchingly Stakes betting they were a market drifter with the course rated a Dead (5) and Second Effort known primarily as a wet tracker.

They proved they were more versatile than that however.

After missing the start jockey Brad Rawiller, aboard also for the Monash Stakes and their earlier win in the Wangoom Handicap back in May, recovered and by the finish Second Effort ($5.50) had a half length to spare over the Dale Short-trained roughie Academy Jack ($41).

“I was calling Brad (Rawiller) a few names at the start when he missed the kick again but it was a terrific ride and he really rides well when he needs to ride for luck,” the winning trainer McDonald said post-race.

Finishing off the winning Bletchingly Stakes trifecta in third was then the Peter Snowden-trained Launay ($6) who was three quarters off the winner after challenging for the lead over the final 100 metres.

Race favourite and last start Monash Stakes winner Pago Rock ($3.80) meanwhile could only manage to run third just under three lengths off Second Effort.

McDonald was thrilled with his horse’s efforts.

“He’s a great horse; he’s been terrific for the stable,” McDonald said.

“He was very unlucky the other day and we were confident going into today but you just start to question yourself when the track started drying out.

“I thought it was a terrific win considering that he’s probably now looking for the seven furlongs (1400m), so heading towards his next two runs we’re pretty confident.”

The first of those runs will be a title defense in the $220,000 PB Lawrence Stakes 2013 on August 17.

“He just keeps coming up year after year,” McDonald said.

“Same time, same horse and we’re hoping it’ll be the same result next time out.”

Following the Lawrence there was a chance Second Effort would also be given a shot at the big time in the $350,000 Group 1 Memeise Stakes (1400m) on August 31, also at Caulfield Racecourse.

“It’s the same set of races I won with Regal Roller a few years back,” McDonald said of the program Second Effort was following this season.

“This horse isn’t up to Regal Roller’s class, but he’s honest and this is his time of year.”
