It’s been confirmed this week that the dominant early 2013 Melbourne Cup betting favourite Puissance De Lune will make their new season return at Caulfield Racecourse in the $220,000 Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on August 17.
The announcement ends months of speculation as to when punters and race fans would next get a glimpse of the Darren Weir-trained stayer who is based at Ballarat in country Victoria.
It’s shaping up as a huge Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival for the rising six-year-old, Shamardal grey Puissance De Lune dominating early markets for the iconic $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).
They hit the top of the odds for the famous Flemington feature, set to run as Race 7 on Tuesday November 5, after their huge finish to last spring.
After putting eight lengths on their closest rival in the Bendigo Cup over the mile and a half the horse went up to 2600m for another emphatic victory this time by five lengths in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m).
Ridden for a third straight time by triple Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss for their first-up autumn run Puissance De Lune scored a Group 2 win, albeit sharing the success after dead-heating with Budriguez in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 9.
The stallion was subsequently spelled after pulling up with heat in his fetlock which was later attributed to bone chips that required surgery.
Having come through the minor surgery well Weir has been brimming with confidence ahead of what will be a lengthy spring prep for Puissance De Lune.
“He’s not a horse that needs a lot of racing so he won’t have too much,” Weir said this week according to AAP.
“He’s bigger and stronger, he’s still pretty gross but he’s in great order,” Weir also told TVN.
There’s also a chance Weir will run them in the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25 leading up to the Cup, a race they are currently rated a $19 chance to win.
If they put in a good first-up run in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes then their price to win the Melbourne Cup is sure to firm in from their current price of $9 – the only hopeful under double figures.
