Griffiths Pretty Happy About 2013 Lightning Stakes Results

Over the weekend Cranbourne-based horseman Robbie Griffiths was given something to celebrate when he returns from holidays with his smart filly Prettyhappyaboutit scoring her maiden black type victory in the Lightning Stakes 2013 in Adelaide.

The lightly-raced three-year-old daughter of Magnus had previously enjoyed two wins from seven starts but made it a trifecta first-up with her good effort in the $80,000 Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

Resuming off a 10 week break, before which was ran third to Truffle in the mud at Sandown, Prettyhappyaboutit was given her chance at stakes level with her trip to Adelaide which was her first interstate assignment.

Ridden by South Australian hoop Dom Tourneur the filly put in a winning performance as a $26 outsider beating home the Peter Moody-trained favourite Thermal Current ($2.05) by a full length.

She also carried 1.5kg more than Exceed And Excel colt Thermal Current (54.5kg), last seen running third in the Blue Diamond Preview back on Australia Day, adding merit to her success.

In third was then another double figure roughie with the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Heart Of A Lion ($18) nearly three lengths off the winner after threatening for the lead on the home straight.

It was an excellent Lightning Stakes result for Tourneur who celebrated his most successful riding season to date including his maiden Group 1 win with Maybe Discreet in the Schweppes Oaks back in April, and who was also full of praise for Prettyhappyaboutit.

“She was a deserving winner,” Tourneur told The Advertiser.

“It worked out pretty well, she jumped really well and then I was able to get her to relax for 300m and give her a breather, that was the key.

“But she was really strong on the line.”

Tourneur also believed that Griffiths would be able to find a nice Group race for her over the coming spring season tipping her for more success.

“She’s really honest and obviously has a big future,” he said.
