John McArdle’s young filly Miracle To Me earned herself a Thousand Guineas 2013 target this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with a decisive win at Sandown on the weekend.
The soon-to-be three-year-old daughter of Bel Esprit had previously won one of her four starts in the wet at Werribee back in February and made it a double with a half length success in the $35,000 Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1200m) on Sunday.
It showed a nice improvement on her two earlier thirds at the track on Heavy-rated ground, Sunday’s event run on slightly firmer Slow (7).
Connections also enjoyed a nice pay day with the $21,000 first prize also accompanied by a $14,000 VOBIS Gold bonus.
After finding herself out wide and towards the back of the field Miracle To Me ($5.50), ridden by Chris Symons, did well to run round up her rivals and beat home the $4.60 equal favourites Charnzel (2nd) and Sight Of Land ($4.60) who were both less than a length off the winner.
“I actually nearly dropped my whip at the top of the straight,” Symons said after the win according to Racing Victoria.
“I fumbled it, dropped it, it landed on the horse and luckily I was able to pick it back up and she won. It would have been a different story if I didn’t.”
While there’s still a way to go for Miracle To Me to get up to Group level this season, Hyland is hoping the $42,000 yearling buy can progress during the spring and end up in the mix for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse on October 16.
“She’ll be nominated for the Thousand Guineas, whether she’s good enough, we don’t know,” McArdle was reported as saying by Racing Victoria on Sunday.
“At this stage, we’ll turn her out – she’s done nothing wrong – and bring her back and give her a crack at a couple of those fillies’ races at 1400 and 1600. If she stands up she stands up, if she doesn’t then we’ll go back to the paddock.”
Should she go down the traditional fillies’ races in the lead-up to the Thousand Guineas punters could catch a glimpse of Miracles To Me in events such as the $175,000 Group 2 Schweppes Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) on September 21 and the $220,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 5.
