Second Effort Headlines Bletchingly Stakes Final Field

Racing Victoria has released the final field for the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) that will be run at Caulfield on Saturday with Group 2 winner Second Effort the headline act.

Second Effort resumed in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) a fortnight ago and impressed when flying home late to finish third.

Trainer Clinton McDonald has set the rising seven-year-old for the final Group event of the year and the Mossman gelding’s chances of adding another black type win to his racing resume have increased significantly thanks to the massive amounts of rain that have hit Melbourne in the past two days.

Second Effort, along with Red Tracer and Rain Affair, is one of Australia’s best wet track performers, with nine wins from eleven starts on rain affected tracks, and will relish the heavy ground expected at Caulfield on Saturday.

Also set to compete in the Bletchingly Stakes is John Monash Stakes winner Pago Rock who will jump from barrier nine.

The Rock of Gibraltar gelding has won three out of four starts this campaign and was very impressive against a strong field in the John Monash.

Another horse backing up from the John Monash is Elite Elle who finished second after a bold front running effort.

The Shamardal filly has failed to live up to her early career form and has been defeated as a short priced favourite on several occasions this campaign, but is another horse that performs well in the wet.

Veteran gelding Stanzout is set to make the sixty-ninth appearance of his career after the decision of trainer Colin Davies to bring the rising eleven-year-old out of retirement was justified when he ran fourth in the John Monash Stakes.

Stanzout will be making his fourth appearance in the Bletchingly Stakes after finishing second behind Shoot Out in 2010, third behind Mid Summer Music in 2011 and second last behind Ready To Rip last year.

Zamorar flopped badly in the John Monash but will be given the opportunity to redeem himself on Saturday.

The four-year-old finished second in the race last year and went on to run second behind Second Effort in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) three weeks later.

Also included in the Bletchingly Stakes field are Launay, Sea Lord and Academy Jack.
