2013 July Sprint Final Field and Barrier Draw Announced

The 2013 July Sprint (1200m) is set to have a State of Origin-like feel with Queensland sprinters Funtantes and Griffon among the acceptors for the race that will be run at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

With very little quality racing on offer in Brisbane this weekend, trainer Robert Heathcote has taken the opportunity to embark on a hit and run mission in Sydney and contest the $85,000 prizemoney on offer in the sprint.

Funtantes, who will jump from barrier five,  will be making her first appearance in Sydney since finishing fifth in the 2009 Group 2 Roman Consul (1200m) while Griffon (barrier two) will be returning to the city where he started his racing career under the care of legendary trainer Bart Cummings.

Leading the New South Wales-based charge is Havana Rey who will carry the top weight of 60.5kg and jump from barrier four.

The rising five-year-old will be making her first appearance at the races since she finished at the tail of the field in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1600m) at Randwick in April.

Trainer Bjorn Baker has set the gelding for the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on August 24 but is hopeful the son of King Cugat will run well on Saturday.

The only last start winner in the field is evergreen sprinter Youthful Jack who showed the acceleration of a much younger horse when he flashed home to record an impressive victory in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton a fortnight ago.

The rising eight-year-old has not won in Sydney since his victory in the 2009 Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) and faces a tough assignment after being allocated 59kg, four kilograms more than he carried at his last start.

Joseph Pride-trained See The World (barrier three) will also carry 59kg and is looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance behind Mic Mac in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) at Rosehill Gardens earlier in the month.

The Danzero gelding is reaching the end of a lengthy campaign but jockey Nash Rawiller will be desperate to get the best out of the six-year-old as he does battle with Hugh Bowman for the Sydney Jockeys’ Premiership.
