Leading 2013 Caulfield Cup (2400m) fancy Zydeco is expected to miss the race with a number of niggling injuries disrupting the preparation of the rising four-year-old.
Zydeco has not raced since the 2012 Spring Racing Carnival where she was one of the most consistent performers in three-year-old fillies races and recorded a maiden victory at Group level.
The Darley filly finished fifth behind Maybe Discreet in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) and third behind Commanding Jewel in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) before winning the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
The daughter of Zabeel went into the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) as the clear favourite but was outstayed in the final stages of the race by Dear Demi and finished second.
Trainer Anthony Freedman bypassed the 2013 Autumn Racing Carnival with Zydeco, with his eyes firmly set on the riches in the spring, but Freedman admitted that a Caulfield Cup campaign now appears very unlikely.
“She’s had a few issues and we’re a bit behind time with her,” Freedman told News Limited.
“She had a short preparation and has had to go back out.
“I would think getting her to a Caulfield Cup is now unlikely as she will need a bit longer out, but I’ll play it by ear.”
Zydeco was among the leading chances when the 2013 Caulfield Cup betting market was released at bookmaker.com.au last month but she is now well down the order at odds of $41.
Three-year-old Triple Crown winner It’s A Dundeel is the current Caulfield Cup favourite from Bendigo Cup winner Puissance De Lune, Chris Waller-trained Royal Descent and imported European stayer Jet Away.
The race is still months away but you can already find the best Caulfield Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au.
