Schofield Wants Criterion Ride This Spring

Leading Sydney jockey Glyn Schofield is hopeful he can partner Criterion during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival after the rising three-year-old impressed during a barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday.

Criterion contested the seventh trial of the day over 900 metres and was ridden at the tail of the field for the majority of the race before finishing strongly, without been asked for an effort, in the final stages of the race.

Schofield rode Criterion in his first three career starts, including his victory in the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m), but was forced to give up the ride after previously committing to ride Charlie Boy in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).

Trainer David Payne was unable to find a regular rider for Criterion for the reminder of the autumn but Schofield has put up his hand to reclaim the job for the spring.

“I’m hoping to ride him this spring,” Schofield told News Limited.

“He’s a smart horse and we’ll see if he can progress to the next level.

“I had a prior commitment to another horse prior to him winning the Black Opal, and the horse went on from there.”

The son of Sebring received no luck when finishing sixth in both the Golden Slipper and Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) but Schofield is confident that the colt has returned for this preparation a much stronger horse.

“He’s a more mature horse than he was in the autumn,” the veteran jockey said.

“He has grown taller but he’s still quiet, as quiet as a lamb.

“It was a slowly run trial today but he worked to the line well under a strong hold.”

Criterion is set to begin his campaign in the Group 3 Run To The Roses (1200m) at Rosehill on August 31, which was won by Pierro in 2012, before progressing to the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 14.
